The Documentary Photographer/Blogger: Ms. Tsunoda
Brij and Nirav invited me to have a conversation with them about my internship yesterday. Together, we have designed/planned out my time here in India in more detail; they were very generous to incorporate many of my ideas from a proposal that I had sent them!
I was agreed that I accompany the film crew (that is making a documentary of SLS) and help out at the field sites. I'll be actively participating in organizing the shooting of the film as well as discussing/conducting research for and developing PlanetRead and BookBox further. Today, for example, Scott, Nikhil, and I drafted a one-page promotional piece on PlanetRead that will be mailed out to individuals and organizations with whom we hope to work in the future.
Brij and Nirav also gave me their support in my idea for an individualized project that I could do. I will be documenting rural villages through photography and written reports, both of which will then be incorporated into a PlanetRead blog. This blog will be created in hopes of allowing the new website (due to be uploaded shortly) to tell more of a story about PlanetRead and the people who we try to help. (I was fortunate to have the opportunity to help design the new website and am very excited about it!)
I will also be organizing a project to encourage children in the villages to share their stories/perspectives on village life through photography. The idea is to give them a camera for a day and ask them to take pictures of what they love the most about the village, what they think is the most important etc. This is similar to the "Born into Brothels" idea, and we hope that it will give these children more of a voice via PlanetRead. We plan to select the best photos and stories and share them on the new website.
Today, I will be doing some research on the internet to try and find a school for the Deaf here in Pondicherry or around the area. Brij and others have a keene interest in how SLS could benefit the deaf community here in India and internationally. Nikhil and I have done some preliminarly research, but unfortunately, many of these schools are not listed online. However, there seem to be many schools located in the cities of Chennai and Mumbai, so there is still a good possibility that we will be able to start some research and documentation on this exciting new idea!
